As a result of the merging of several water businesses from 1 July 2004 and the amalgamation of both regional urban and rural water businesses, VicWater reviewed its sector arrangements so that there is now one regional sector containing the former rural and urban businesses. Regional businesses may provide a range of services to their customers including urban and/or rural services. The amalgamation of urban and rural businesses on 1 July 2004 has resulted in two businesses (Grampians Wimmera Mallee Water and Lower Murray Water) providing both urban and rural services.
There are 16 regional water businesses in Victoria that provide urban and/or rural services. The following summarises the types of services that businesses may provide:
Urban services: supply water and wastewater services to regional towns.
Rural services: manage large headworks and/or bulk supplies to regional towns and farms.
